That sounds about right. I think both legitimate schools and McDojos really took off right around the time the original "Karate Kid" came out, which seems to have popularized the idea of martial arts with the general public (true, it wasn't even close to being the first martial arts movie released in the U.S., but it's the one that was seen by a good portion of the general public, and not just die-hard martial arts fans).
